Developing a device for protecting spaceborne electronic systems against cosmic radiation

The capsule mission launched to the ISS was part of a research  program for developing an innovative space-based device. The device enables  commercial electronics to be used in space by shielding them from the damage  caused by cosmic radiation. The capsule has the potential to revolutionize  the satellite industry, generating substantial financial impact. By making  advanced electronic components usable in space, the device promises to  substantially shorten lead times and reduce development costs for space-grade  products.

The capsule’s inclusion in the Rakia mission provided a rare opportunity to test the building  blocks of this technology in space. Alongside academic research, this  experiment and its subject matter are leveraged to advance a science education program focused on space and radiation.
