Testing a next-gen anti-radiation vest
AstroRad is an anti-radiation vest designed to protect astronauts on voyages to the moon and Mars, with the vest’s unique design selectively shielding vital organs from space radiation. Prolonged exposure of these areas to radiation during extended missions can impair their function and even lead to fatalities over time. The vest is currently undergoing ergonomic testing by a NASA team on the International Space Station, in a study sponsored by the Israel Space Agency.
The second-ever Israeli astronaut, Eytan Stibbe, participated in the study, wearing the suit in microgravity for variable periods during routine activities and assessing his range of motion, comfort and overall experience. Stibbe provided critical feedback, assuring that the AstroRad would be fit for use on prolonged missions in deep space.
